President’s rule imposed in Jharkhand
On 18 Januaray 2013 President Pranab Mukherjee imposed President’s rule in Jharkhand following its approval by the Union Cabinet on 17 January 2013The former Union Home Secretary, Madhukar Gupta, and the former Central Reserve Police Force Director General, K. Vijay Kumar, had been appointed advisers to Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmed.On 18 January 2013 the President was proclaimed the imposition of President’s Rule in Jharkhand under Article 356(1) of the Constitution. This was the third time the state was placed under a President rule.

Lance Armstrong stripped of Sydney Olympics medal
The IOC acted after the International Cycling Union (UCI) took away the American’s seven Tour de France titles that he won from 1999 to 2005 on 22 October 2012 when he was found guilty of doping.Armstrong had 21 days to appeal against the UCI’s decision, but did not do so.The International Olympic Committee sent a letter to Armstrong on 17 December 2013 asking him to return his bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

One peak left for Premlata to conquer 7 Summits
The oldest Indian woman to climb Mt Everest, Premlata Agarwal, had reached the summit of Mt Vinson in Antarctica and now has only one peak left to conquer the 7 Summits, the highest mountains of each of the seven continents.Premlata, 47 years old and a mother of two, has scaled the Mt Vinson (4897 m) on January five without being able to acclimatise with the freezing weather.Premlata has scaled six summits — Mt. Everest (8848m, Nepal, Asia), Mt Elbrus (5642m, Russia, Europe), Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m, Tanzania, Africa), Mt Vinson (4897m, Antarctica), Mt Aconcagua (6962m, Argentina, South America) and Mt Carstensz Pyramid (4884m, Australia) and only one peak is left to conquer the 7 Summits.She would become the first Indian woman and one of the oldest women in the world to conquer the 7 Summits, if she succeeded in climbing Mt McKinley, which she had narrowly missed last year because of rough weather.Premlata had taken up the adventure sports in 2000 and climbed the Mt Everest in May 20, 2011.

Supreme Court bans shrines, statues on public roads
The Supreme Court of India on 18 January 2013 passed an order that constructing religious structures such as the temples and shrines on the public land was banned.The bench of Justices R M Lodha and S J Mukhopadhaya, in its order declared that henceforth no state should grant permission for installation of any statue or erection of structures on the public utility places, pavements, public roads as well as the sideways.The order can empower municipal and government bodies to prevent unauthorized constructions being carried out under the garb of religious structures as often local political interests and religious sentiments render authorities helpless.

Indians asked to avoid violence prone areas in Nigeria
India had issued an advisory to its citizens in Nigeria, asking them to limit their exposure to areas where radical Islamic sect Boko Haram is active. The Indian High Commission in an advisory placed on it’s website also warned Indian crew-members of ships to be careful while plying their ships in Gulf of Guinea, dominated by pirates. The advisory mentioned some Indian victims of violence in Nigeria, which included one killed and six injured on January 20, last year during a multiple attack by Islamic fundamentalists Boko Haram in the northern city of Kano.

Indian researcher bags Alzheimer’s drug discovery award
London-based Indian researcher Mahaveer Golechha was selected for a prestigious award for his work on a drug to cure Alzheimer’s.The 27-year-old will be travelling to San Francisco to receive the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation’s ‘Young Investigator Scholarship Award’ at the 7th Annual Drug Discovery for Neurodegeneration Conference in February 2013.

28th Congress of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) conference was inagurated by president Pranab Mukherjee
The Inaguration of 28th Congress of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) conference in Hyderabad on 17 January 2013, President Pranab Mukherjee, called for greater participation from the private sector as well as the medical community in the drive against poverty-linked visual impairment.

Saina Nehwal rises to 2nd, Parupalli Kashyap in top-10 of BWF rankings
Olympic bronze-medallist Saina Nehwalgot the career-best second rank in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on 17 January 2013.Saina gained a rung to be second with 80091.7444 points.The Indian, who is currently competing in the Malaysia Open Super Series, is a distant second to top-placed Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China who has 94626.7153 points.In the men`s list, Olympic quarter-finalist Parupalli Kashyap got a career-high 10th rank.

Ancient River Found on Mars
On 17 January The European Space Agency scientists have revealed a 1500 km long and 7 kilometre wide river that once ran across Mars.The images which were captured by the ESA’s Mars Express showed Reull Vallis, the river-like structure, which is believed to have formed when water ran from the surface of Mars in distant past. The structure which surprised the astronomers stretches for around 900 miles or 1500 km across the Martian surface and also shows various tributaries. These structures, it is believed, were formed somewhere around 3.5 billion years ago.

India Increased Rafale Fighter Jets’ Order
India could buy up to 189 of the Rafale fighter jets currently being used by France to bomb Islamist militants in Mali, sources close to negotiations on the multi-billion dollar deal .The possibility of an additional 63 jets being added to an expected order for 126 was raised by India .The Indian press has estimated the value of the deal for 126 Rafales at $12 billion (nine billion euros).A 50 per cent increase in the number of planes ordered would take it to around $18 billion, in a huge boost for the French defence industry.

Vice President Hamid Ansari Visited Vietnam
Vice President Hamid Ansari visited Vietnam from 14 to 17 January.During the visit Ansari met Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh and discussed the both countries bilateral issues , signed several agreements .Ansari attended the closing ceremony of the celebrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the India-Vietnam diplomatic ties.

Recruitment scam: Ex-Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala convicted, arrested
Former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, his MLA-son Ajay Chautala and 53 others were convicted on 16 January 2013 by a Delhi court for the illegal recruitment of over 3000 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers in the state.After the court pronounced its judgement, all the convicts were taken into judicial custody. The court has fixed January 22 for pronouncing the quantum of sentence.

Haryana girls retain U-20 hockey title
Haryana defeated Uttar Pradesh 1-0 to retain their under-20 women hockey national championship at the Gachibowli Stadium on 16 January 2013.

India to be among 3 largest economies by 2050: PwC
Emerging economies are set to grow faster than the developed economies over the next four decades and India is likely to become one of the three largest economies by 2050, says a PwC report.According to the report ‘World in 2050 The BRICs and Beyond: Prospects, challenges and opportunities’, the global financial crisis has accelerated the shift of the economic centre of gravity and China is expected to surpass the US to become the largest economy in the world by 2050.By the year 2050, China, the US and India are likely to be the three largest economies in that order, while Brazil could overtake Japan to be the fourth largest economy.

10th Knowledge Millennium Summit
President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the 10th Knowledge Millennium Summit on ‘Curing the Incurables – Sharing of Innovations’ organized by ASSOCHAM on 16 January 2013 at a function at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The Indian subcontinent is home to 16.5% of the world’s population and at any point of time, it is estimated that there are over 2 million people with incurable and other chronic diseases. A majority of Indian patients have late-stage incurable diseases (75% to 80%) when first diagnosed. In recent years cancer killed approximately 5, 56,000 people in India. This is predicted to rise by 2030, to nearly 1.5 million deaths annually. World Health Organisation (WHO) data currently suggest that in India, only 35% people have access to essential medicines and Health care.Provision of universal health care is a matter of faith for the Government. The Government is looking to scale up public investment on health from the current level of 1.2% of GDP to 2.5% of GDP by 2017 i.e. the end of 12th Plan and 3% by 2022 i.e. end of 13th Plan. The President presented the Millennium Award to Prof. Aaron Ciechanover, Recipient of Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the year 2004.

Obama Signed 23 Executive Orders on Gun Safety
On 16 January President Barack Obama announced 23 executive actions on gun control laws, making them stricter,which would come into effect immediately after his signatures. One of these measures include requiring the target shooters to keep their guns locked and also to ban military-style assault weapons, high capacity magazine as well as to make the background check mandatory.Obama announced that this was his attempt to keep children safe, keeping in view the massacre of Newtown where 20 first grade children along with six adults were killed.

Indian Scientists Discovered Molecule for Cancer Treatment
A team of Indian researchers, led by Dr Sathees C Raghavan of the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore, have identified a molecule which they claim will revolutionise the cure for cancer.The molecule has been named after “Sathees as SCR7” and a detailed account of it has been carried in the international scientific journal “Cell”.Scientists world over believe that the double strand break (DSB) of DNA is one of the most lethal form of DNA damage, resulting in drastic consequences such as genome instability, and cancer.

Mohan Pieris assumes duties as 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka
On 15 January 2013 ,Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed his cabinet’s legal advisor as the country’s new Chief Justice to succeed Shirani Bandaranayake. Rajapaksa sworn in new Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to replace Sri Lanka’s first woman chief justice who was impeached by the parliament in a controversial move.Peiris, a British qualified solicitor who retired in 2011 as the Attorney General was serving as the legal advisor to the Cabinet.

Indians Migrated to Australia 4000 Years ago
A study by researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, has now confirmed evidence of substantial gene flow between Indian population and Australia aboriginals about 4,000 years ago. It was a time, when the Island Continent was not even in contact with the Europeans. The study also claims that the Indians, who migrated from India to Australia, would have carried the Dingo dogs over there. The migrants also gave training to the Australians in the usage of stone tool technologies that changed the way Australian aboriginals lives their lives.

Pakistani Supreme Court orders arrest of prime minister in corruption case
On 15 January 2013 Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the arrest of the prime minister in connection with a corruption case linked to power projects. The Supreme Court gave authorities 24 hours to arrest Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and 16 others.This is the first in the history of Pakistan to arrest a Prime Minister.

India – Vietnam Signed on Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises
On 15 January India and Vietnam signed an MoU aimed at building capacity for developing institutional framework and identifying thrust areas and opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises in this country.The MoU was signed here between the Ministry of Planning and Investments of Vietnam and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of India .

Krishi Karman Awards 2011- 2012
On 15 January President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Krishi Karman awards for the year 2011-12 at an award ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The awards were presented to the State Governments for their excellent performance in increasing the production of food grains in their respective states.

India, China to resume joint military exercises
India and China are decided to resume the joint military excercises in the fifth annual defence dialogue held at Beijing on 14 January 2013.The Indian delegation led by Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma reached the agreement with his Chinese counterpart Deputy Chief of General Staff General Qi Jianquo.

French forces ‘destroy’ Mali rebels
On 14 January 2013 France’s air force have launched fresh strikes in northern Mali, targeting the city of Gao which had been controlled by the al-Qaeda offshoot MUJAO, destroying rebel bases and forcing the fighters to flee. Mean while Some of West African Countries like Naijiria, Ghana and Senegal are ready to do the help to Mali in controlling the rebels.

Rajapaksa dismisses Chief Justice
On 13 January 2013 Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa sacked the country’s first woman Chief Justice Shirani Bandarnayake after ratifying her impeachment by Parliament which held her guilty of corruption, notwithstanding widespread protests by lawyers and others. She appointed as a chief Justice on May 2011.

Internet activist, programmer Aaron Swartz commits suicide
Aaron Swartz, a programmer and Internet activist who was facing federal hacking charges from MIT, committed suicide on 11 January 2013 in New York City.When he was just 14, Swartz helped create RSS(Rich Site Summary), a software that lets people subscribe to online content.He also Co-Founder of the web site Reddit.

Former India cricketer Rusi Surti passes away
Rusi Surti, the former Indian Test cricketer, passed away on 13 January 2013 in Mumbai. In the Ranji Trophy, Surti was a key member of the Rajasthan and Gujarat sides in the 1950s and 1960s. His highest first-class score of 246 not out came for Rajasthan against Uttar Pradesh in 1959-60. He retired from first-class cricket in 1973 with an overall aggregate of 8066 runs and 284 wickets in 160 matches.

Maldives Prez party faces prospect of de-registration
Less than a year after he was sworn in as President of the Maldives, Mohamed Waheed is facing the prospect of his party being dissolved as a new bill passed by the Parliament requires a minimum membership of 10,000 for a political group to be recognised.President Waheed, whose Gaumee Ihthihaad Party (GIP) has only 3,427 members, had returned the bill to Parliament for reconsideration earlier this week.

R.K. Dubey,had been appointed the Chairman and Managing Director of Canara Bank on 11 January 2013.Dubey joined Punjab National Bank in 1977 as a management trainee and moved up the ranks to become a general manager in 2008 and was appointed as executive director of Central Bank of India in 2010.

Central Bank of India appoints executive director
Central Bank of India has announced that R K Dubey, executive director has ceased to be the director of the bank with effect from 11 January 2013, upon elevation as chairman and managing director of Canara Bank.Further, Raj Kumar Goyal, general manager of Bank of India has joined the Central Bank as executive director with effect from 11 January 2013.

Largest Space structure in the Universe:Large Quasar Group
An international team lead by astronomer Roger Clowes of the University of Central Lancashire in England discovered the largest known structure in the universe, a clump of active galactic cores that stretches 4 billion light-years from end to end.This is the largest Space structure in the Universe.This structure is known as a “Large Quasar Group(LQG)”.

Soumyajit Ghosh becomes youngest national table tennis championship
India’s number one player Soumyajit Ghosh on 11 January 2013 became the youngest national champion after he defeated six-time winner Achanta Sharath Kamal in the summit clash of the 74th National Table Tennis Championships. In the women doubles K. Spoorthy and Nikhat Banu (AP) beat Madhurika Patkar and Pooja Sahasrabudhe (Pet) 14-12, 3-11, 11-7, 11-5 in the final and got the title.
